Darryl's Story

Darryl had no idea his life was about to change one Friday in February...

Darryl's story is similar to a lot of homeless individuals. Darryl lost his job and place of residence and was living in the City of Columbia Emergency Winter Shelter and under city bridges when the shelter was closed. Darryl was in the process of trying to put his life back together when when he met Midlands Community Development Corporation staff and volunteers during a Total Recovery Network S.H.A.R.E. of the Midlands event at the emergency shelter.

Darryl showed genuine interest in finding out about all of the recovery support services and classes MCDC had to offer. Without hesitation, Darryl made the decision to take advantage of a MCDC scholarship to enroll in the Certified Nursing Assistance (CNA) Program. MCDC Total Recovery Network partnered with Salvation Army to assist Darryl with securing the tuition, books, supplies, and uniforms necessary for him to successfully enroll and complete the CNA program.

Four weeks later, Darryl graduated top of his class with a 97 grade point average and began his clinical practice. He proudly shared that, "this was the turning point and empowerment boost that I needed to turn my life around".
